3. New Grammar Point IV: Starting Points and Ending Points in both TIME and SPACE

A から B まで from Point A to Point B

へや から 学生かいかん まで いきました

I went from....

キャンパスからレストランまで バスで いきました。

I went from...to....BY.....

The で indicates the means by which you went (car, bus, train, bike, walking, etc.);

If you want to ask about HOW people got from A to B you say....

なん で いきましたか =

By what means did you go?

How did you get there?

NOTE: We can't use で when we are going "By foot," because we use the verb "Walk" あるきます in its -て Form = あるいて

We we will learn the -て Form of both Verbs and Adjectives in L. 6 but we already saw -て Forms way back in L. 1 when we learned polite requests with -て 下さい like

みて下さい = please look

かいて下さい= please write

よんで下さい = please read etc.

いって下さい = please say it (p. 20)

Another Question: How Long does it take?

どのくらい かかりますか =  How Long does it take?

かかりますか = it takes

セーラム から ポートランドまで くるま で どのくらい かかりますか

Note: When we talk about "Duration," i.e., Elapsed Time, we have to add the word かん(間)to the Time Phrase

いちじ= 1:00 ーーー> いちじかん = 1 hour long

にじ= 2:00 ーーー> にじかん = 2 hours long

さんじ = 3:00 ーーー> さんじかん = 3 hours long, etc.

When it involves a half hour, e.g. 1.5, 2.5, or 3.5 hours long, the はん(半) for half, comes AFTER the かん so we get

いちじかん はん(一時間半)for 1.5 hours long/duration

BTW, in place of

どのくらい かかりますか = How Long does it take?

we can also ask:

なんじかん くらい かかりますか? = About how many hours (long) does it take?

When we say it takes so many X じかん ぐらい かかります we are saying

"It takes about or around (approximately) X hours...

When we are taking about Minutes (ふん) we don't add the かん to signify an interval of time at all

30ぷん ぐらい かかります = it takes around 30 minutes

Practice:

セーラムから ユージーン まで バスで

イートンホールから 学生かいかんまで あるいて** See NOTE above

ポートランドからシアトルまで でんしゃで

大学から ランカスターモール まで くるまで

キャンパスから ブシュこうえんまで あるいて

キャンパスから セーラムセンターまで  じてんしゃで

ここから 大学のアパート(U Apps)まで あるいて

How long does it take to walk from 学生かいかん to Olin Hall?
